This instrument is also called "Gagakubiwa".
As the name suggests, it is used for Japanese Gagaku.
Biwa was come down from China to Japan and evolved uniquely.
In now, there are 4 kinds of Biwa in Japan.
Among them, Gakubiwa is an instrument that has been handed down without big changes.
