[10min Gallery Talk] 7/3(wed),7/5(fri):Sho
The sho is believed to have come from the Tang Dynasty during the Nara period (710-794), and is included in the Shosoin Treasures.
It is a wind instrument used in gagaku (ancient Japanese court music) in the Tang Dynasty. The 17 thin bamboo tubes are shaped like a phoenix resting on its wings, as in the beautifully named “Ho-sho.
